Customer Reviews

Liking the whole Android thing I've avoided an iPad and finally got a tablet from Lenovo - the K1. I also have an Android phone, use a couple of PCs (one for work and one at home) and have an HTC Android phone, so the whole Google app alternative to Apple, kind of appeals. So far I have not been able to put the K1 down! Well that's when I can get it off my kids! Popped in my google account details and wham it's all there. Setting up wifi was a doddle and a few updates popped in just like an android phone via alerts in the bottom bar. In fact my Android phone was not as easy as the Lenovo to link up with your Google account. If you are new to this having a free google account is the way you really get the power of Android - like Apple users do on their iPads and phones and Macs, it allows you to have your email, photos, calendar, documents, contacts all available on any device - all synchronised. Same for apps like Kindle and Evernote which also seem to work really well.
I must warn you, the rest of my family are iPad/iPhone users so we have this little Android vs iPad/iPhone contest going on. So far I like to think I'm ahead - my Mum's iPad has a bug preventing it connecting to her PC/iTunes and as it doesn't update over wifi (doh!) she is kinda stuck (yes I know Apple finally support over the air updates recently, but to do that you need to update the old op sys by connecting to a PC - which doesn't work). On the phone side iPhones don't support blocking nuisance callers like a click on an android phone does - but hey, I digress ;-)
So the Lenovo K1 - what I like ....
The homepage has this shortcut feature which you either like or you don't. I quite like it, though I read some folks prefer having lots of icons on the page. The nice thing is you can edit it easily to feature to your favourite 5 "zones" or apps. So I have all my pop mail, contacts, calendar, browser and facebook right there on the front. Changing it and setting it up to link to each was really simple. On the right of the zones is a little button which brings all the settings to you in ONE place (my experience of Android phones is that setting are spread out a bit so having it all in one place was much better - in fact - quite a lot better!). The editor for the zones was placed, like settings but as a little cog icon on the left of the zones.
App Shop. One thing I was not sure about at first but now really like is the Lenovo app shop. It was not as intuitive as it could be but you quickly get used to it - it does ask for a credit card to get going, which I found a bit off - but this is the same as you give apple or the Android market - ways to bill you if you download chargeable apps. The app shop runs in parallel to the Market but is much more professional in the way it presents tested and recommended apps. You can also have your apps update automatically if you choose to and can manage your apps from the store. I like how it emails you each time my apps auto update when I am not around. I have switched all my apps to auto update.
The way you manage apps seems much better than my Android phone too - the layout of the whole desktop is shown to you on one screen, so you can drag apps to the exact place on whichever screen you want it on - so organising and reorganising is much better than on a phone. Installing and uninstalling is the easiest I have found so far. You also have buttons to simply adjust widgets, apps, wallpapers and more from a very intuitive screen. When you have too many running apps and want to kill a few there is a button at the bottom of the screen that lists all open apps and lets you switch to another to close any you don't want running any more (very iPad like actually though it runs vertically not horizontally, so you just tap your finger on the bottom app over and over to close them all).
Buttons. As well as the running app button there is a nice home button which on the tablet screens takes you to your home screen, or if in any app takes you to the app launch page on first click, then the homepage on second click. There is a nice BACK button which does what it says by allowing you to step back within apps, just like on a web browser. There is also a little button at the bottom centre that brings up a rotating set of favourite apps, which you can also customise with the little +/- button that appears with them.
One of my favourite buttons launches the voice search tool. I can press it then say "email john, subject, bed time" and up pops the email with the details already there. I think this is really cool and waste far too much time testing it out on directions, setting alarms, writing notes, and web searches etc. It's much more fun than typing!
Installed Apps: Lenovo seem to have put some decent apps on the K1. I had not heard of Documents to Go but it's pretty useful when it comes to using Powerpoints, PDFs, Word docs etc. It was a lot easier than my experience on the iPad and didn't need me to download anything.
The Printer share app was brilliant. Took my documents, found my printer on wifi and just printed it. Amazingly simple. It provides you with a number of free prints, after which you pay to use the app - dunno how much but it works very well.
The browser is fine - i prefer it to my iPad experience as it seems much closer to the PC browser experience. I was impressed it came up logged onto my iGoogle page the first time I launched it - obviously all picked up from my Google account, but saved time and made me feel right at home!
Kindle was there so I put in my account details and hey presto my books appeared where I left them on my actual kindle. Simples! In fact I like reading on the tablet more than the little kindle but don't tell Amazon ;-) (in the sunlight I may change that opinion)
Kongregate - My kids steal the K1 off me mostly because of the games. Again I had not come across Kongregate but it's an ever expanding library of Flash games that all appear to be free! I can see I need to delete that icon! Flash famously is not supported by the iPeople so this is one of my killer arguments in the family feud Oh and Angry birds came preinstalled but the kids already finished that thankfully! I did notice a bunch of new apps that must have been installed my the kids - Clouds and Sheep is brilliant, I love Cut the Rope and Stupid Zombies but Blast Monkies and Defender are my favourites (don't tell the kids!). I still can't believe they are all free and the cousins on their iToys can't get them all yet - hah!
I have not got to all the music or video apps yet but I can vouch for my favourites; dropbox (brilliant), skype video calls, facebook, email (pop and gmail), contacts (Brilliant), google maps ; Latitude (Brilliant), Evernote, Ocado, Amazon, eBay, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, Kindle, Google docs and a whole host of games are all working great.
So what don't I like?
Well frankly not much to complain about. Skype initially didn't support video but an automatic update fixed that whilst I wasn't looking.
The volume and on/off buttons are too close. I have accidentally switched off a few times when I wanted more volume.
The app shop is actually great but some of the best features are hidden at the very BOTTOM of the screen so are harder to get to than they should be!
There is a physical button at one end that is actually quite clever as it acts like a HOME button but also exits apps and if you swipe it then you go back a screen. I don't really use that but if I rest the tablet in my belly to play or use apps in portrait mode, my belly has a habit of pressing the button. OK so maybe this is more MY design problem than the K1 - not sure ;-)
All in all this is a prettly likeable machine. Battery seems good (unlike smart phones), performance seems good, apps are plentiful and favourable when compared to iThings, being able to do all the things iPoeople can do without being wedded to iTunes is great and provides a real alternative way of working whilst delivering more or less the same benefits. Oh I did get the cover (amazon sell it for £14.99) which slots neatly over the tablet and allows you to protect it but also to perch it at the right angle for watching youtube recipe videos whilst you cook (Actually I don't use my PC in the kitchen any more - this is far better suited).
My main complaint comes from the kids - we only own ONE K1. Still Christmas is coming and my 10 year old daughter has already spotted the Lenovo A1 which she has decided is the one for the ladies in the family. Whilst my son wants his own K1! Cheeky!

I own a 7 inch Galaxy tab for a year now and decided to upgrade to a 10 inch tablet. I did not want to pay iPad premium price or to be locked in Apple eco-system. There are plenty of sub £300 unknown brand android tablets on the market but I wanted a reliable, reputable, brand with ongoing product support. After much research, Lenovo K1 was the best choice for quality and price.
The tablet feels much heavier than my 7'' tab and I found it easier to rest it on my lap for long periods. The tablet edge is made of metal and overall the tablet feels of good quality. The volume /power buttons are well positioned on the side and are easy to operate.
The 10 inch screen is GREAT: watching videos on Youtube / iPlayer is so much better ! It is also much faster with its nVidia Tegra processor making internet browsing a smoother experience. I can also run multiple apps witout having to close them down. As for the sound, the speaker is certainly no hifi but adequate. The touchscreen (often a weak link in tablets) is very accurate and responds very well to multigestures. It also seems more responsive than my Galaxy tab.
The K1 comes with many useful pre-loaded apps: mutlimedia (kindle, iPlayer...), office, antivirus (3 months trial), games and all the usual android apps (Google marketplace, Google maps, GMail etc...). It also uses a very clever "card" system to show some popular features (such as Youtube videos).
In summary this is probably the best value for money 10 inch multimedia tablet. Very happy with it and would definitely recommend.
